About Joachim

Welcome to my site thechesslife.com. My name is Joachim and I’m 35 years old. If you love chess the way I do (or just like it a lot… 😀 ), you’ve come to the right place!

My story

As a young kid growing up in the city of Porsgrunn, Norway, I learned the fundamentals of chess through my father. After not too long, he started driving me to and from a local chess club for kids, which really sparked my interest (huge shout-out to my dad for that!)! I instantly made many new friends (whom I still meet and play frequently to this day), and couldn’t be more grateful for my father’s choice back then!

From here my passion just grew, and I got to go on numerous adventures through chess: I started small with some local tournaments, then played several national championships, made my way to the nordic championships for kids, and even got to qualify for the european championship under 16. Along the way I also racked up a couple of wins in the national championship for kids, alongside a team win in Norway’s top national league. Not a Magnus Carlsen resume, but still something I’m quite proud of, and really happy about getting to experience!

Another pretty cool thing, I think, is when this picture was taken: Me and a friend decided to set a Guinness World Record for the longest blitz marathon, and we did! Over the course of nearly 41 hours we played 250 blitz games, which was the new world record at the time! This was in 2015, and we had our names in the 2017 edition of the book.

Now, though, life’s reached a different phase for me, with a wife and little daughter, I’m only playing chess for the fun of it (although it was fun before as well) and trying to promote the wonderful game to anyone interested.

Why do I want to help people?

Well, first of all, I’m an elementary and middle school teacher, so helping people is what I do and love on a daily basis. Secondly, I know how hard it can be to find what you want and need in the chess world, so I would love to be the one to point you in the right direction. Also, I think that helping other people out is truly a valueble thing to do. My motto has always been: Do to others what you want them to do to you!

So, if you’re a youngster who needs guidance towards the right training material, a grandparent who wants to get the right equipment as a gift, or anything inbetween, I’m here to help you make the right decision.

In addition to this, I simply want more people to “find chess”! What do I mean by that? Well, chess is simply the easiest life long hobby you can have, and you can – and hopefully will – enjoy no matter your age or skill level! I know I am, at least, and I’m long past the age where I was disgusted by a blunder I made or a tournament I didn’t win.

So my goal is simply that you get the opportunity to enjoy chess too!

Why this chess website?

One word: Reach!

Through a website you can reach so many people at the same time, and that makes it so much more fulfilling to do! Without this YOU would probably never even have heard of me, and now I might be the one that gets to help you out!

If you ever need a hand or have any questions, feel free to leave them below and I will be more than happy to do just that:

Help you out 🙂
